We believe all behavior is a form of communication, so at Aptitude Behavioral Services, we strive to teach the most effective means of communication to all our client. When creating a plan for functional communication, we take family preference and learner skill level into account before creating goals and assigning modes of communication for the learner to use. This may involve the client learning to utilize picture cards to show what they want or a child being taught basic one- to two-word phrases. Some clients may achieve using full sentences while others may best communicate with an assistive device. Each child's communication plan is individualized to fit their needs, and those who communicate most with the child are also consulted. For instance, we would never try to teach a child sign language if the child could not effectively use signs in a classroom. We will always consult with an SLP if the child is receiving speech therapy.
